5 Tips for Raising Your Child as a Reader

If you love reading and want to impart on your child how important it is to read, not to mention how fun it can be to read a good book, there are some steps you can take to help ensure they grow up to be a reader. From starting as early as possible to finding books they are interested in, such as a personalised childrens book, here are a few tips that can help your little one find a passion for reading.

Personalized Story Books

Start Early

The first and possibly most important tip is to start as early as possible. You can read to your newborn baby the day they are born, assuming you have enough energy. You can read them virtually anything at that age, from the book you were reading to the user’s manual for your car. The key is that you read, in-person, and directed at them. Audiobooks are not good enough in this case. Read out loud, every day, even if it’s your cookbook. They may not look like they are paying attention, but they are still absorbing the cadence of language, sounds, and words.

Stay Age-Appropriate

Newborns will listen to anything. As they grow, they will likely want books that engage the senses, especially touch. Board books are excellent at this stage. Through the preschool period, they will also like books with repetition and rhymes. While they are still trying to wrap their head around talking, you are likely to find books with silly and nonsensical words and sounds. These are easier for young babies to mimic. Older toddlers and preschoolers often like books with flaps to lift and other interactions. For that age group, find picture books and books with words that are easy.

Find Books They Are Interested In

Another trick that goes along with reading age-appropriate books is to find books and series that they are interested in. It could be from their favorite movie or show, or it could be a funny series they saw on a bookshelf. You can also order kids personalized books online, where your child is the star of the book, often featuring their name and an avatar. They will love reading a book where they get to go on a fantastic adventure. You can find personalized books that are also educational, too, teaching positive values.

Broaden Their Horizons

Your child might love reading the same book over and over again, and that’s okay. If you are ready for variety, however, you can slowly steer them in new directions. Keep reading the book they love, but only once before moving on to a different book or two before returning to their favorite. They might even have a new favorite soon!

Answer Questions

Finally, don’t be afraid to stop and answer their questions. You can stop after a sentence or page, but be sure to engage inquiring minds. This shows your child is engaged and wants to interact with you. If they don’t seem interested in the story, ask them about the pictures or what they think the story should be about.
